Nursing Home Abuse in Frankfort, Kentucky

Nursing Home Abuse: How it happens, and how to spot it

Because Frankfort is the place where I live and work, I know this community in a way that the big firms from out-of-town never can and never will.  Because I am based here, you can be confident that the ONLY nursing home abuse cases I will take are cases from right here in Frankfort and the surrounding communities.  If you believe that you or your family member has been mistreated in a nursing home, I may be able to help.  The first step is to call me.

What causes nursing home neglect and abuse?

Low Staffing Levels: When a nursing home fails to hire enough staff members, the result may be that residents may be neglected.  Dangerously low staffing levels can overwhelm staff members who are stretched too thin.

Inadequate Training: Sometimes nursing home staff members do not receive the training they need to provide the level of care that residents and their family members expect.

Negligent Hiring: Nursing homes owe it to their residents to hire staff members who are properly qualified, have the right training and education for their positions, and no histories of abuse or violence.  A nursing home that hires without background checks is putting the residents at risk.

Responsibility for Actions of Third Parties: Nursing homes have a duty to provide a safe environment from their residents, and that includes taking care to keep out people who shouldn't be in the building.

Breach of Statutory or Regulatory Rights: Nursing home residents are entitled to certain rights by law.

Medication Errors: Nursing home residents can suffer if they aren’t provided the right dosage at the right time.

What to Look for: How to Spot Signs of Nursing Home Abuse

Here are some common signs of nursing home abuse:

  • Bruises or bleeding
  • Emotional withdrawal
  • Bedsores
  • Malnutrition and dehydration
  • Silence around caretakers
  • Unexplained diseases or infections
  • Physical discomfort
  • Sudden financial difficulties
  • Bills left unpaid by the resident
  • Changes in the resident’s will
  • Change in power of attorney

Often, nursing home residents are afraid to come anyone about the hardships they are experiencing. As a result, it’s important that families of nursing home residents keep a close eye on their loved ones and seek legal counsel if they believe that abuse may have taken place.
